Some of the popular Fort Myers attractions include the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, which were once the winter homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford and are now a museum and botanical garden. Other popular attractions include the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, the Imaginarium Science Center, Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, and the fabulous area beaches.

BRIEF HISTORY OF FORT MYERS, FL

Fort Myers has a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century when it was first established as a military fort during the Seminole Wars. The fort was built in 1850 on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River and was named after Colonel Abraham Myers, who was the quartermaster general of the United States Army at the time.

After the Seminole Wars ended, the fort was abandoned for several years. However, in the late 1860s, it was reactivated to protect settlers from attacks by the Seminoles and other Native American tribes in the area. In the late 1800s, Fort Myers began to grow as a town, thanks in part to the efforts of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, who both had winter homes in the area. Edison purchased property along the Caloosahatchee River in 1885 and built a home and laboratory there. Ford purchased a neighboring property in 1916.

During this time, in the late 1800s – Fort Myers became a popular destination for tourists, and many wealthy northerners built winter homes in the area. Fort Myers also became a hub for agriculture, with farmers growing crops like tomatoes, celery, and cucumbers. By the 1920s, Fort Myers experienced a real estate boom, with developers building hotels, homes, and other buildings throughout the city. However, the boom ended abruptly in the late 1920s when the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. During World War II, Fort Myers played an important role as a training base for soldiers, and many of the buildings that were constructed during that time are still standing today.

In the decades that followed, Fort Myers continued to grow and develop, with a focus on tourism, healthcare, and retail industries. Today, the city is a popular destination for visitors from around the world, who come to enjoy its beaches, golf courses, and other attractions.
