J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel, is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States. President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order creating the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge in 1945 for the purpose of and in 1967 was renamed in honor of Jay Norwood Darling. It is world-famous for spectacular migratory bird populations.

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian in 2022. The Park is expected to announce new hours of operation after repairs are completed.

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area located on Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida, USA. It is named after Jay Norwood Darling, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist and conservationist who played a key role in establishing the refuge.

The refuge covers 8,000 acres and is comprised of a mix of mangrove forests, wetlands, and upland habitats. It is home to more than 270 species of birds, as well as a variety of other Florida wildlife such as alligators, river otters, and manatees.

Visitors to the refuge can take a scenic drive or bike ride along Wildlife Drive, a 4-mile road that winds through the refuge and provides access to various hiking trails and observation points. The refuge also offers guided tram tours, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and educational programs for visitors of all ages.

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is part of a larger complex that encompasses the Caloosahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, The Matlacha Pass National Wildlife Refuge, Pine Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Island Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, and Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The majority of the lands in these refuges are nesting and roosting islands.

In addition to being a popular destination for wildlife viewing and outdoor recreation, the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is also an important center for research and conservation efforts. The refuge conducts scientific studies and habitat restoration projects to help protect and preserve the natural resources of the Paradise Coast area.
