History of Florida Winemaking & Vineyard

Winemaking in Florida has a long and varied history. The state’s warm, humid climate is ideal for growing grapes, and winemaking has been practiced in the region since the first Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s.

The first recorded winery in Florida was established in 1828 by French immigrant Charles Louis Degen, who settled in what is now the town of Monticello. Degen began cultivating the native muscadine grape and producing wine, which he sold to local residents and travelers passing through the area.

During the 19th century, several other wineries were established in Florida, including the Horseshoe Plantation Winery near Tallahassee, which produced muscadine wines, and the San Sebastian Winery in St. Augustine, which was founded in 1882 and is still in operation today.

In the early 20th century, however, the Florida wine industry suffered a setback due to the spread of the phylloxera pest, which destroyed many of the state’s vineyards. Winemaking in Florida did not fully recover until the 1960s, when new grape varieties and growing techniques were introduced.

Today, Florida is home to dozens of wineries, many of which specialize in muscadine wines, as well as other varieties such as Blanc du Bois, Carlos, and Noble. Some of the state’s top wineries include Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards in Clermont, Keel & Curley Winery in Plant City, and Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery in Homestead.

Despite its long history and current popularity, the Florida wine industry still faces challenges, including competition from other wine-producing regions and ongoing issues with pests and weather. However, winemakers in the state continue to innovate and experiment, producing unique and flavorful wines that reflect the region’s rich history and diverse culture.
