In the St. Johns River region, an unusual tale floats around the town of Green Cove Springs—that of a mysterious mermaid seen lounging on the banks or swimming in the springs.

Fishermen from the 1800s told of a beautiful woman with long hair and a glimmering tail, beckoning boats toward the rocks. Some believe she’s a nature spirit or a guardian of the spring. Others think she’s tied to the legend of a sunken Spanish ship.

Despite no photos or firm proof, sightings pop up every few decades, keeping the legend alive like the waters she supposedly calls home.
