Few legends have shaped a city’s identity like that of José Gaspar, a ruthless pirate said to have terrorized Florida’s Gulf Coast in the late 1700s. While historians argue whether he ever existed, Tampa has embraced his myth with full fervor.

Known as Gasparilla, the pirate supposedly established a hidden base along the coast, hoarding treasure and luring ships to ruin. His ghost is rumored to protect his buried riches near Gasparilla Island.

Each year, Tampa holds the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, a swashbuckling celebration complete with a full-on pirate invasion. Whether fact or fiction, José Gaspar’s legacy is alive and booming. Florida Pirate legends are world-famous.
