Deep in the heart of the Everglades lies one of Florida’s most notorious cryptids—the Skunk Ape. Often referred to as the southern cousin of Bigfoot, the Skunk Ape is said to roam the swampy wilderness of Big Cypress and Everglades National Park. Described as a foul-smelling, ape-like creature standing seven feet tall, its first sightings date back to the early 1960s. Local lore tells of campers hearing guttural growls and stumbling across enormous footprints. One of the most infamous stories involves a woman near Ochopee who captured a blurry photo of the beast raiding her backyard in the 2000s. The small Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in Ochopee continues to investigate.

Whether a holdover from prehistoric times or a runaway primate, the Skunk Ape remains one of Florida’s most compelling mysteries.
