BRIEF HISTORY OF MARCO ISLAND, FL
Marco Island is the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands. The island was first discovered by the Calusa Indians over 5,000 years ago, who were known for their advanced civilization and maritime culture. The Calusa thrived on Marco Island for hundreds of years until they were decimated by European diseases brought over by Spanish explorers in the 16th century.
The island remained uninhabited until the late 1800s, when William Thomas Collier, Jr. rediscovered the island. Collier was a wealthy real estate developer who saw the potential of the island for tourism and development. He purchased large portions of the island and began to develop it into a resort destination, building hotels and other amenities.
In the early 1900s, the island was a popular destination for wealthy tourists, who came to enjoy the beautiful beaches, warm climate, and abundant fishing opportunities. The island continued to grow in popularity throughout the 20th century, and in 1964, the city of Marco Island was officially incorporated.
Today, Marco Island is a thriving community with a population of approximately 18,000 residents. The city is known for its beautiful beaches, excellent fishing and boating, and its luxurious resorts and vacation homes. It is a popular destination for tourists from around the world, and its economy is largely driven by the tourism industry.
