History of Keewaydin Island: Keewaydin Island has a storied past, dating back centuries to the time of the Calusa Indians, who inhabited the region. The Calusa were masterful seafarers and skilled craftsmen, leaving behind shell mounds and artifacts that offer glimpses into their ancient civilization. European explorers, including Spanish conquistadors, later encountered the Calusa in the 16th century, shaping the island’s history through colonialism and trade. Keewaydin was called (Kee Island) Key Island in the 1890s. One of the original Keewaydin camps for boys was located here.

The name “Keewaydin” may have derived from an Indian word meaning “the north wind” or “home wind”.

The Keewaydin Club: Established in the early 20th century, The Keewaydin Club has played a significant role in the island’s development. Originally a private retreat for affluent families, the club offered a range of amenities and activities, including dining, water sports, and social gatherings. The Keewaydin Club is not currently operating on Keewayding Island.

The Biden Family Vacation Home: Keewaydin Island gained national attention when the Biden family acquired a vacation home on its shores. The secluded residence provides privacy and tranquility for the presidential family, highlighting the island’s allure as a premier destination for relaxation and leisure.

Keewaydin Wildlife: Keewaydin Island is home to a diverse array of wildlife, both on land and in its surrounding waters.
