Estero Florida
SW Florida Paradise Coast Cities
Welcome to Estero, Florida. Estero is a Spanish word that means “estuary” – where the land meets the sea. Estero is a village in Lee County, Florida, United States.
Brief History of Estero, Florida
Estero is a small town located in Lee County, Florida, United States. The history of Estero dates back to the late 19th century when the first settlers arrived in the area.
In the late 1800s, the Koreshan Unity, a religious group led by Dr. Cyrus Teed, moved to the area and established a settlement they called the “Koreshan Unity Settlement.” The Koreshans believed in a theory called “Cellular Cosmogony,” which held that the earth was a hollow sphere with humans living on the inside surface. They built several unique buildings in the area, including a bakery, a general store, a sawmill, and a printing press.
The Koreshans also established a number of industries in the area, including farming, fishing, and boat building. They built boats known as “Koreshan Unity Boats,” which were designed to be both seaworthy and shallow enough to navigate the shallow waters of Estero Bay.
In the early 20th century, the Koreshan Unity began to decline, and by the 1960s, the last surviving members of the community had sold their property to developers. The State of Florida eventually acquired much of the land that had once been the Koreshan Unity Settlement, and today it is part of the Koreshan State Historic Site.
After the decline of the Koreshan Unity, the area around Estero began to grow and develop, and today it is a thriving community with a population of around 30,000 people. The town has a number of parks and nature preserves, including the Estero Bay Preserve State Park, which is home to a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles, ospreys, and manatees.
In recent years, Estero has become known for its shopping and dining, with the opening of the Coconut Point Mall and several high-end restaurants and hotels. Despite this growth and development, the town has managed to maintain its small-town charm and natural beauty, making it a popular destination for tourists and retirees.
